How to Get Rid of Unwanted Furniture
Out With the Old, In With the New: Discarding Unwanted Furniture

Blue Sofa

While you may be ready to move on to something new, you’ve still got the issue of your old furniture to deal with.

So how do you get rid of it so that you can free up some space for that suede loveseat you’re obsessed with? Well, you have a few different options.

Here’s what you can do with old or unwanted furniture.

Donate Your Furniture

Of course, this only applies if your furniture is in good shape. But if it still works perfectly and you’re just ready to move on, why not donate it so that someone else can put it to good use?

There are a lot of different organizations that will put your gently used furniture to excellent use, and some of them will even come and pick the furniture up for you.

You can locate the nearest furniture bank using the Furniture Bank Association of North America (FBANA). When you do this, your unwanted furniture goes to someone who needs it.

When you donate to charities, all of the proceeds help their work in building up communities and people in need. You can donate furniture, appliances, and building materials. They even offer free pickup for large furniture items.

Both the Salvation Army and Goodwill are excellent options for donating the things you no longer want and may even offer free pickups.

Sell Furniture Online

If you’d like to sell your old furniture so that you can put the money down on something new, you’re in luck. There are a lot of different apps and websites that will allow you to do just that.

Offer Up is one good option. It’s a site that allows consumers to offer up their own counter price, which will enable you to negotiate rather than losing out on a potential buyer because of a fixed price.

And if you’re a closeted hoarder, it may be time to use Letgo. This site is perfect for getting rid of your unwanted items, but be sure to take quality photos, as they will be your best selling point.

And of course, eBay and Craigslist are two standard options for selling and making a quick buck.

Give Your Furniture Away

For furniture that’s not in good enough condition to donate or sell, giving it away can be a perfect alternative. There are plenty of people willing to fix, reupholster, or repurpose your broken or worn down furniture, and most will even come and pick it up from you.

Try FreeCycle. As one of the largest recycle and reuse websites out there, plenty of people will be looking at and claiming your unwanted furniture.

Craigslist has a free section where you can list your unwanted furniture. But be careful, because you’ll find some pretty cool stuff on there and you may walk away with more than you bargained for.

And of course, there’s always the classic leave it on the curb with a ‘free’ sign attached and see if someone picks it up, but you should check your local laws to make sure that’s actually allowed. If you live in an apartment, it’s probably frowned upon.

Throw the Furniture Out

The last choice you have is to throw the furniture away. When your items are badly damaged and don’t seem like they can be of use to anyone, it’s probably best to go with this option.

If you’re doing a complete overhaul, you may want to consider renting a roll away dumpster to get rid of all of your big pieces.

Another option is your local bulk trash company. When you call them, you can just leave your furniture on the curb.

Some areas have free bulk trash pick up days throughout the year, so check with your city or town to see if and when they offer it.
