5 Ways to Make Your Dorm Room Stylish and Functional

Whether you’re heading off to school for the first time, or dreading your return to a bland dorm room, you’re probably looking for ways to make your living space feel more like home.

It can be hard to personalize your dorm room, considering all of the regulations that colleges place on students. But there are still things that you can do to completely transform the look of your room.

Here are 5 stylish and functional dorm room ideas to make your living space look less like a prison and more like home.

Not sure what decorating style fits you best? Check out our guide on how to identify it.

1. Loft Your Bed

The first thing you’ll probably notice about your new dorm room is how small it is. It doesn’t help that you’re probably sharing the space with one or two other people.

How will you have friends over? Or move around and stretch when you need a break from studying? How will you even breathe without fanning your roommate?

The best space saver is lofting your bed. Many dorm beds are adjustable, so take advantage of it.

Once you lift your bed, you’ll notice that you have enough room under it for additional seating, or to move your desk there.

2. Fabricate Privacy

The next thing you’ll probably notice is the lack of privacy that comes with sharing a room. Unfortunately, you can’t put up a wall between you and your roommate’s bed, but you can fabricate a little privacy.

Using a bookshelf, you can create a divider in the room. It won’t be a space of your own, but it will make a big difference.

3. Use Sneaky Storage

Chances are, you probably have a lot of stuff and not a lot of space to put it. No one wants containers to take over their room. It just makes your dorm feel even less like home.

The trick is to find furniture that also doubles as storage.

Consider buying a storage ottoman. Not only will it store your extra clutter, but it can also act as additional seating or a nightstand.

Another option is a mirror with hidden storage. Keep your jewelry organized and out of sight. You’ll be able to look at your outfit in the mirror and then open it up to find the perfect accessory. Win-win.

4. Comfort is Key

You never know what floor you’ll end up with when you move into your dorm. Whether it’s carpet or tile, chances are it won’t match your aesthetic.

A throw rug is essential to making your room feel more comfortable and can add a pop of color in an otherwise dreary place.

5. Let the Light In...Or Block It Out

Most dorms come with standard blinds that either don’t block the light out at all or do it too well. Whether you want to let the light in or block it out, curtains can be an excellent way to upgrade your dorm while also decorating it.

Hang curtains easily with command hooks and adjustable rods, so you don’t ruin the walls.
